This weekend (2nd – 4th April), I’ll be part of a team entering the 48 hour film challenge 2011, hosted by Sci-Fi London. Along with some FXhome staffers and a bunch of others, we’ll be attempting to write, shoot and edit a short film (up to five minutes in length) according to the brief Sci-Fi London hand out. Sometime Saturday morning we’ll be given a film title, line of dialogue, and prop to include, then it’s all systems go. We’ve already sorted out a large crew of talented people + me, and scrabbled together film equipment including a home made cable cam!
I’ll be attempting to live blog throughout the weekend, along with sending out the odd tweet and behind-the-scenes image. I’ll probably get all the terminology wrong, so feel free to correct me in the comments. Depending on how little sleep I get, my commentary might get a little… deranged… by Monday morning, so bear with me. I’ll also post a full article after the competition, with a link to the finished film.
Live blog
Monday 1409 hrs
what next? sleep for most people, then after that, more guns! more films! I’ll be writing up a longer, slightly more flowing piece on the film, and how it all went. We’ll see about getting some comments from other team members also. Finally I’m going to round up links to some of the other submissions, will post them here.
Monday 1255 hrs
ah go on then.. http://vimeo.com/21916501 enjoy!
Monday 1216 hrs
As for the video link, not sure yet when we’ll be posting it publicly (it could be a week or so, it could be sooner). This is due to a courtesy request from Sci Fi London, who run the competition. The rules don’t require that we keep the finished film private, so a decision on this will be made by the team soon.
Monday 1210 hrs
It’s done! Final cut just inside of five minutes, film submitted electronically and DVD mailed in per the submission guidelines. Massive thanks from the whole team to our editing heroes, Ross and Rob, and to Josh, who came back after a mere few hours of sleep to work even more FX magic.
Monday 1101 hrs
It’s the final countdown! (Duh da duh duh, duh duh duh-duh-duh..) 1 hour till submission deadline..

the heat is on! VFX from Josh so far is supreme, so much gore and awesome. Ross is editing away, whilst we record some dialogue from the actors.
Sunday 1858 hrs
no update this afternoon due to connectivity and mad filming panic. We finally finished shooting at about 1830, after some tough shooting choices and an entertaining shoot in an underpass near the city centre. Editing and sfx work has begun!
Sunday 1257 hrs

that’s it for tonight, at the modest time of 2 AM. Regrouping tomorrow at 8.30, which means getting up at 7 on a Sunday! Arghh.
Saturday 2328 hrs
I realise I mistyped the brief earlier. Prop is actually “a spiral bound notebook with 3 words written on it, starting with A, R, T, then a 4th word should be added to the list on camera, starting with N”. Somewhat specific, no?
Saturday 2325 hrs
just watched a rough edit of scene 1 which Ross (and his glamourous assistant Mark) has knocked up. Wowowowowowowoweeeeee.
Saturday 1849 hrs
So we wrapped at 18:00 today, everything and everyone that was supposed to be shot got shot. Time for pizza before some rough editing and sfx work.
Saturday 1632 hrs
more great work from Carla on makeup, Juliet looks mortally wounded
Saturday 1623 hrs
good quote from director Ross “you’ve got blood in your pants!” perhaps the pressure is getting to him..

Our homemade cablecam worked a treat earlier, though there was a minor hiccup when our tree wrangler got stuck up there.. he had manfully tightened it too much
Saturday 1507 hrs
still shooting, Josh just returned with a few armfuls of cheeseburgers, very welcome.
