Desert Island Discs
Given that Madagascar’s south includes some very arid areas (the famous spiny forest), it seems an appropriate time to pick my Desert Island Discs.
Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
For my first choice, it has to be Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. I had to resist the urge to add the whole album, which borders on perfect.
Led Zeppelin – When The Levee Breaks
Grandiose. apocalyptic, and best served loud. The best song on a great album.
Led Zeppelin – Kashmir
The “definitive Led Zeppelin song”, I love every last second of Kashmir (and at eight and a half minutes, its longer than some). Such power, without being heavy metal.
Fleetwood Mac – Dreams
I couldn’t go to a desert island without taking some Fleetwood Mac, and Dreams is one of my favourites.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience – All Along the Watchtower
Without doubt one of the greatest covers of all time, Watchtower is excellent. Never fails to remind me of BSG (though in fairness, that was the original Dylan version).
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Freebird
An anthem for would-be hard rock enthusiasts.
Tape Five – Geraldine’s Routine
Something a little different, Tape Five’s unique sound is a very lively electro-swing, epitomised by the excellent Geraldine’s Routine. If you haven’t heard it, get yourself a good drink, and some space to move your feet.
The Who – Won’t Get Fooled Again
So many excellent power chords, plus that scream.
Book
The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas Adams. A collection of writings from throughout his life, funny, intelligent, and definitely re-readable. Also includes an unfinished Dirk Gently tale – one of literature’s most curious detectives.
Luxury
For my one luxury whilst marooned, I’d like an unlimited supply of ingredients for mixing my favourite drink, the rum old-fashioned. Given enough time I might even be able to make it as well as the barman at the Ten Bells in Norwich.
